Hi, I’m Marissa

I am a Portland-based editor and writer with a background in journalism and trade publishing. I studied photojournalism at the University of Oregon, and I focused on editorial work through Ooligan Press. My goal is to put these skills to use to help tell and help others tell stories in my community. The Pacific Northwest is a bountiful region, reflective of the myriad of people who call this corner of the world home.

I have spent the last nine years honing my understanding of the English language and how to tell a great story. My professional experience has placed me in leadership roles, both managerial and project management. As copy chief at Ooligan Press, I edited fifty to sixty documents a quarter, managed the editorial timeline for our Library Writers Project book collaboration with Multnomah County Library, and edited the staff blogs which were posted twice a week.

My written work has been published on The Odyssey Online when I wrote for them while in undergrad and on the Ooligan Press blog covering topics such as the press, our work or the publishing industry overall. I recently finished a master’s thesis researching state regulations to lower book bans. My curiosity often drives what I write. I love learning about a new topic and exploring all the sides of a given argument that I can. I value the role journalism plays in our society to inform and connect with our community, but also undercurrent that it is a responsibility to uphold integrity, authenticity and honesty for the communities you write for and represent.

I'm also a photographer (The photos on this site are all mine!), live-music lover, outdoor enthusiast, and Star Wars (science fiction) nerd. When not working,  I can be found in my big cozy chair reading or playing video games with a steaming cup of coffee to keep me warm.

Also check out my book bingo card for 2026! In attempt to continue challenging myself to keep reading, but value content and pushing my boundaries over pure quantity, I made this bingo card.
