Hi, I’m Marissa
I am a freelance editor with a background in journalism and trade publishing bringing my skills and services to writers outside of the traditional publishing industry. With a foundation in copyediting and an expanding list of services such as proofreading and fact checking, I work to bring independent writers and authors access to the same caliber of industry-standard editorial services as with traditional publishing, without needing to conform to industry expectations on how you publish your book.
I have spent the last nine years honing my understanding of the English language and how to tell a great story. I received my BA in journalism from the University of Oregon and my MA in book publishing from Portland State University. While at PSU, I worked as the copy chief for Ooligan Press in charge of editing and overseeing our internal and external book marketing copy, blog posts, and managing the editorial timeline of the Library Writers Project title The Blue Line Letters.
Now a contract editor, I work with publishers and authors to edit manuscripts for publication. Through my freelance work, I want to help open doors for those who cannot or do not want to follow the traditional publishing avenue. Diversity in book publishing is still lacking, and it is our responsibility as industry professionals to help elevate the multitude of diverse voices, characters, and stories in an industry that has historically kept them out.
As a contract editor, I have had the joy of editing manuscripts across genres. My main genres of focus are science fiction and mystery. I have experience working with memoirs and nonfiction and am keenly focused on environmentalism, sustainability, and responsible outdoor recreation. But I am open to anything. No subject is too mundane; no topic is too small!
I'm also a hobby photographer (the photos on this site are mine!), live-music lover, outdoor enthusiast, and Star Wars nerd. When not editing, I can be found in my big cozy chair reading or playing video games with a steaming cup of coffee to keep me warm.
